A female motorcyclist in her 40s has died when her bike collided with a station wagon at an intersection in Tasmania’s north on Thursday afternoon.

A nine-year-old who was seated behind her on the bike was seriously injured in the incident.

The station wagon and the bike crashed near the intersection of Bass Hwy and Native Plains Rd in Sassafras, 23km south of Devonport, about 12.10pm.

“Sadly, the rider of the motorcycle, a woman in her 40s, died at the scene of the crash,” Tasmania Police said.

“The pillion passenger on the motorcycle, a nine-year-old, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries.”

The child was transported to Launceston General Hospital.

The driver of the station wagon was not physically injured.

Investigations are ongoing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“Our thoughts are with all affected by the crash,” Tasmania Police said.
